Parent/Child Conflict

What Is It?

Living with others increases the opportunity for all types of interaction, especially conflict. When there is strain in the relationship between caregiver and child, communications may break down and arguments become more frequent.

How many kids
are affected?

Struggles between parents and children are common. In fact, families may conflict more frequently than other social groups. Current theory and research suggests that the greater the interdependence between people, the more likely they will disagree.

How do I Know?

Chronic conflict within the parent-child relationship can escalate, causing distrust and damaging even the closest relationships. It can be seen easily when arguments are heated and/or when youth intentionally disobey. But it’s also present when children refuse to discuss an issue or even withdraw and isolate themselves. Unbiased professional counseling can help mend hurts and find common ground to improve family communication and harmony.
