“Juan ” a ten-year-old boy was referred to the residential program by Franklin County Children's Services. Juan's behavior was out of control. He would not follow directions, was verbally and physically assaulting his peers, and had poor interpersonal skills. He was not able to talk or interact well with his peers and efforts at conversation often ended in fights. He defied authority and attempted to manipulate situations to meet his own needs. He was failing in school and at risk of being expelled due to his out of control behavior.

Juan was an abused child and had been removed from his home by Children's Services. His behavior was so severe that foster home placement was not possible. He was in Residential and Partial Hospitalization programs at SVFC for ten months.

Through treatment, Juan learned to play and engage with others. He increased his level of trust in adults and learned to verbalize his feelings of frustration towards peers instead of acting out violently. He was discharged to a caring, skilled foster home where he continued his progress. He returned to an SED classroom to also help him continue to improve his behavior in school and improve his opportunity for academic success.

During the next year in foster care, his behavior continued to improve. A recent update from his foster mother was very positive. Juan's behavior had improved to the point where he was returned to a regular classroom and was doing well both socially and academically. He was no longer fighting and had not been suspended once in the past year. At home he was helpful (doing chores, assisting one of his disabled foster brothers in daily living), had significantly decreased being argumentative, and had only been in one physical altercation with his foster brother in the past 6 months.

Thanks to the intensive treatment at SVFC combined with the care in a loving, skilled foster home, Juan's behavior improved and he now knows what "family" is all about.
