Success Stories
“Henry” is a 16-year-old boy who lives at home with his mother and two younger siblings. Henry was referred to SVFC by Juvenile Court due to his sexual abuse of a younger sibling and subsequent sexual abuse of a same-age peer. He was having academic and behavioral problems in school, and was unable to control his temper. His mother was in a live-in relationship with a man who was physically abusing her and that created additional stress and instability in Henry's home.
Henry's maternal grandparents and uncles were close to Henry and his mother and served as a source of support for them. They were included in treatment to support Henry and his mom in reaching their goals. While in Outpatient Treatment, Henry attended group, family and individual psychotherapy. He initially presented as a manipulative, angry, immature teen. Through treatment, he gradually became a positive leader in his group and was able to confront other group members on their manipulative behaviors – a sign of progress in treatment.
After three years of intensive outpatient treatment, Henry's behavior improved to the point where he was no longer considered a risk to the community as his potential to re-offend was considered low. His behavior improved in school and he started achieving academic success. He has become a pleasant, likeable young man with a very hopeful future.
