Success Stories
“Randall” is an eight-year-old boy who lives at home with his parents and younger siblings, ages six and three . Randall was referred by his second grade teacher due to being disruptive and unable to respond to the structure of his classroom. He was defiant of authority, ran away when he didn't get his way, refused to do his schoolwork, and would hit and kick objects and other people. According to his mother, these behaviors began in preschool where he would not share with others and threw tantrums.
Due to his behavior, Randall had been suspended seven (7) times from school in the past year. His parents reported no serious problems at home but he would get up in the middle of the night to eat and had a brief history of stealing. He was reportedly sociable and likeable when he chose to be, however, his behavior and negativity were causing him to fall behind in school.
Randall was admitted to the St. Vincent School Age Partial Hospitalization Program where he was evaluated by the psychiatrist, diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and placed on medication. He joined in the structured program and participated in individual, group and family therapy.
After seven months of treatment, Randall's behavior had dramatically improved. He was better able to listen and he improved his communication skills at home. He was discharged to an SED classroom and returned to the care of his pediatrician.
Two months later, the school teacher called to say Randall was sustaining his improvements and had progressed into a regular classroom. His mother is very pleased with his improvement and said she never thought he would be able to make so much progress.
