Woodworkers Visit St. Vincent's Students
Do you remember a time when you were introduced to a new craft or hobby? Was there ever a time when you were amazed for hours upon learning a new skill that you never thought you'd ever be able to master? On June 11, ten talented woodworkers provided that feeling for St. Vincent's students through several hours of learning, creativity and fun. Teachers and woodworkers alike were surprised and elated at how attentive and excited the 12 students, ages ranging from 7 to 12, were for the session. It became apparent through the day that most of these children had never been introduced to woodworking, and had probably never created or built anything with wood — ever.
The students each received wood pieces, dowel rods and screws &mdash all of which moved along with the students from station to station — where instructors waited to help the students work with "cool tools" like saber saws, drills, and more.
What started as blank wood pieces came to life as each student put together a step stool. Each student was presented with a framed certificate honoring his or her achievement and completion. In addition, an announcement was made as each stool was completed — the student stood on the stool to cheers and applause. A final commemoration of the event included a photo taken with the completed "masterpieces", and "Honorary Membership" into the club of the woodworkers.
The woodworking project created memories that will last a lifetime for these very special students. St. Vincent's would like to extend sincere gratitude toward the ten wonderful volunteers who dedicated their time and talent to creating lasting memories for our students.
Thanks go out to Chris Amatos, Fred Ball, Denny Cramer, Lee Darby, Lonnie Edwards, Ron Grady, Beth Kenyon, Chuck Murray, Jim Walters and Keith Rogers — all of whom understood St. Vincent's true dedication to the experience of each and every student — and made a wonderful day happen without hesitation. In addition, in-kind products were provided by Wood Werks and Woodcraft — thanks to those fine groups as well for providing the wood and materials.
