HISTORY

Since its beginnings in 1875 as St. Vincent Orphanage, St. Vincent Family Centers has carried out its mission to provide a continuum of care that enhances the health and well-being of children and families, through its many community and school-based programs.

Change has been welcomed as a part of the growth and development of St. Vincent. From the 1950s through the 1980s, the agency focused its efforts on children in crisis and their families. Programs were developed for the hearing impaired and for children with severe emotional disturbances (SED). To meet the growing need for more mental health services for children, a weekend respite program and an after school program were added to the broad array of services.

In 1996, St. Vincent merged with the Diocesan Child Guidance Center to form Columbus Family and Child Guidance Centers. This consolidation extended the area served by the agency and brought the Day Treatment program for preschool children, a variety of outpatient group counseling efforts and the Step by Step program under one umbrella.

The year 2000 marked the 125th anniversary of the organization. To celebrate that long history of continuous service to children and families, the agency has once again adopted the St. Vincent name. As St. Vincent Family Centers, the often-recognized contributions to the Columbus community continue with services to children and families. We serve children from birth to 18 years of age.
